Constructed entirely by fitting to the frame and precise measurements, we finished the hood edges with French Binding for a clean, polished look. This technique involves back-stitching a wide piece of material, wrapping it around the edge, and then securing it again by sewing along the groove to create a refined rolled-edge appearance.
Next on the project will be a set of side curtains when time allows.
I had the chance to drive this car, equipped with a three-speed straight-cut gearbox—an experience that came with its own unique challenges!
In 1987, Andy completed his motor trimming apprenticeship while working at Auckland Auto Trimmers, an automotive workshop specializing in custom interiors for car enthusiasts along with repair and retrim work from car dealers. By 1994, he had risen to the role of shop foreman, managing quotes for repairs and retrim projects for numerous car dealers in Great North Road and Newmarket. His work spanned an impressive range—from vintage restorations to high-end luxury vehicles, boat covers, and upholstery, even extending to golf carts—reflecting the endless variety of demand in the industry. The mid-eighties craze for aftermarket sunroofs saw these fitted to a wide range of vehicles, and this work was well within the capability of the motor trimmer.
"Great experience dealing with Andy from Fineline. Quick response to the enquiry, custom design fits perfectly and does exactly what we hoped. Highly recommended!"- Dan S
